Interim coach Bo Pelini, the fiery, 36-year-old defensive coordinator in his first season at Nebraska, snuffed out the boycott discussion, walking in on a Dec. 16 players meeting. Mickey Joseph, Nebraska interim football coach Joseph, 54, was named Nebraska's interim coach Sunday. Nebraska has no natural rival in the Big Ten, as much as some want to make Iowa that team. He seems like a guy who prefers to build a program rather than jump to a better job at the earliest chance. coaches Hes been under the big lights of a major college football program, and may be looking for another chance to be on that kind of stage again. He was BYU's head coach from 2005 to 2015, going 99-43, and so it was a surprise when he left that job for a flailing Virginia program, which he promptly turned around and had them going to bowl games. It also worked out pretty well the last time the Huskers hired a Buckeye. Hes the current head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats. Why It Might Work: I think people are more excited by the work hes done at Kansas State, which is to essentially make the program feel like moving on from Bill Snyder is possible. Why It Might Work: Rodriguez created the quintessential Cinderella program at West Virginia, where he would probably still be coaching today had he not taken Michigans offer and left so controversially. Then he became Houstons head coach and kicked butt in year one. Before being Michigans head coach, he was the head coach at Ball State and San Diego State, where he turned around both programs. He is obsessed with winning and is known for relentless coaching, sometimes to unhealthy levels. Nebraska education officials are one step closer to axing the basic skills test that keeps some new teachers out of classrooms. When he was there, he managed to recruit some NFL talentnot easy to do, given the football programs history and Indianas reputation as a basketball school. Closing Comment: Ive heard his name mentioned a bunch, but I just dont see him leaving Kansas two years in, barring a stunning breakthrough. As an alumnus in the coaching field, he may have the highest possible pedigree, and candidates like this simply dont grow on trees. He losta lot. Why It Might Not: Theres not a lot to knock, but theres not a lot to get excited about, either. Why It Might Not: Well, for starters, hes in his late sixties. Iowa) ties and solid coaching, theres some question as to whether he could handle the style of the Big Ten. There is no healthier coaching tree from which to pick a coach: Bill Belichick and Nick Saban. Known for building Temple and Baylor into double-digit win teams despite difficult circumstances, Rhule is now trying to do it in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers. Frost studied under coaching legends, knew the Nebraska program inside and out, had two years of head coaching experience, and still failed. Its highly unlikely anyone else was considered. His record going into 2022 was 90-54, having coached at a couple spots at the FCS level. Anytime you nab a successful head coach from the SEC, its going to create buzz. Scott Frost is out at Nebraska. The former head coach of Penn State and the Houston Texans is now enrolled in Nick Sabans rehabilitation program as an assistant coach for the Crimson Tide. He was Ohio States stellar OC on their national championship team in 2014. It took the Raiders committing $100 million to lure him away from Monday Night Football. Why It Might Not: Everything went south in the second half of the 2021 season and Mullen got the ol ax from the Florida boosters. Why It Might Not: Was Fickells rejection of MSU a signal he wants to stay put long term, or is he leery of Big Ten competition and high expectations which he knows all too well? Closing Comment: This seems like the safest pick. He has shepherded locker rooms accustomed to winning championships each season. Why It Might Work: Hes still young at 47, and its not like his career has been a complete failure. Nebraska He regularly punches above his weight and has out-schemed and out-coached Nebraska on multiple occasions. Then he got booted for off-the-field allegations from his time at LSU. Being a true triple-option team in the Big Ten would be fascinating. That cost Meyer a three-game suspension at the beginning of the 2018 season, his last with the Buckeyes. Blackshirts? Creighton is 53. Jerry Kill: If Nebraska wants to poach a head coach from another school, Jerry Kill seems like a logical direction to go. He retired suddenly after a disappointing 8-5 record in 2019 and hasnt sought any coaching opportunities since. Is this a championship-caliber coach? Hes defensive minded and knows college footballs most fertile recruiting grounds. His head coaching record is an impressive 87-42, but that wasnt enough to satisfy championship-hungry Auburn boosters. He brought Western Kentucky out of the basement and did the same at USF. You may also remember him as Wisconsins OC in 2012, when they put up 70 points on the Huskers in the Big Ten Championship game. The Huskers have added 39 new scholarship players via the transfer portal and the 2023 recruiting class. There are some in Ann Arbor who still feel he didnt get a fair shake, but his career following has borne out that Michigan probably made the correct decision. He severely clashed with the athletic department and school officials, who were apparently looking for a reason to get rid of him. Then he spent a season at Oregon before bolting for the "Dream Job" at Florida State, where he barely lasted two years. But similarly I try to look at how each one might work. But at this point he seems set on staying in Florida. Why It Might Work: Petersens record at Boise State was 92-12. I do like the potential if he were to bring his Florida recruiting cache and mix in his Stanford-Harbaugh style from his early coaching career. Unless Iowa State suffers a total collapse this year, hes going to be the top target for most major open head coaching jobs. Oh, and his current OC is Tim Beck. Candidates Nebraska Coaching -- Urban Meyer has been contacted by Nebraska as the team continues its process of determining candidates for its head coaching vacancy, sources told CBS Sports on Saturday. He served as Marylands interim coach after they fired DJ Durkin. Some argue that he was the one who built that program into what it is todaywinning 3 FCS national championships while he was there, and posting a record of 104-32. It would be like bringing in a far less successful Dabo Swinney. His culture, tireless work ethic and no-nonsense approach would appeal to Nebraska. He might not have the same passion for Nebraska, and that could affect his performance. After 15 seasons, Calhoun has yet to win the Mountain West. He would be a top candidate at any program. He retired from both Florida and Ohio State for nebulous reasons. Closing Comment: Mark Stoops would be a solid hire. Nebraska Cornhuskers coaching candidates Jeff Monken, Army Black Knights head coach Jeff Lebby, Oklahoma Sooners offensive coordinator Brian Hartline, Second, Im bugged by the Mississippi State thing. His departure from Oregon also doesnt sit well and he seems to prefer the Florida region of the country. How would he handle expectations in a much tougher environment? His time at Arizona wasnt perfect either. It also begs the question: how much of Taylors recent NFL success is linked to Joe Burrow? The Wisconsin stint in particular gives him Big Ten cred. And even though hes now saddled with one of college footballs toughest projects at Kansas, many believe he has the Jayhawks headed in the right direction. With little more than a single impressive season, there are reasons for skepticism. He might be better served as a coordinator. He has steadily turned NC State, one of the ACCs most lowly also-rans, into an ascending program. The state of Colorado isnt that far from Nebraska.
